Why does the pH of our foods matter?

Vancouver Naturopath Article of the Week

pH is something that most people only associate with grade school chemistry classes. You learned the basics about the spectrum between acid and alkaline, and how to measure the pH of ambiguous, unknown solutions the teacher put out for you. This is good knowledge but some of us have the thought, “when am I ever going to use this in real life?”

The pH level in our bodies is much more important that we’re told. Again, one of the basics that we are taught is that water rings in at a neutral pH of 7 but just because our bodies are made up of a lot of water doesn’t mean we effortlessly maintain a neutral pH. It all depends on what we consume. And depending on what we consume, our bodies may have to work extremely hard to regain a neutral- and even better, slightly alkaline- pH.

To maintain a happy and healthy body you want to help encourage a pH that is more towards the alkaline side of things. How do you do that? Eat more alkaline foods- and which are those? Mindbodygreen posted both a great infographic and article, What You Need to Know About pH to help decode the facts.
