Vancouver Massage Therapy Article of the Week: Treating Scar Tissue with Massage Therapy
Almost everyone has a scar, and every scar has a story. Scars have all sorts of street creed and are firmly implanted into popular culture. In the 1975 blockbuster ‘Jaws’, three quarreling and sea hardened sailors bond and settle their differences over sharing the terrifying stories of how they got their scars. In the 1992 mindless comedy/action flick ‘Lethal Weapon 3’, uber cool, street savvy detectives Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Lorna (Rene Russo) flirtatiously compare scars and not the least bit surprisingly, romance ensues. In ‘Chasing Amy’, writer Kevin Smith pokes fun at this theme and has Banky and Alyssa engage in a relay of scar story one-upmanship that… Well maybe it’s best you just see it for yourselves.
Now, most of us likely didn’t get our scars from something as Hollywood as a shark bite, a bullet wound, or an angry father bursting in to the room on two unsuspecting teenage lovers, but we know them intimately and have probably told the story a few times. We also may have come to know that our scars, over time, can cause pain, numbness, and restrict joint flexibility. What a lot of people don’t realize is that scar tissue can run in to deep layers of muscles and tissue, interfering with organ function and even cause pain, discomfort and injury to other parts of the body. Whether from a recent surgery, or a childhood injury you’d long forgotten about, massage therapy is integral to treating the symptoms and subsequent issues scars can cause.
Read this great article from Massage Today about how scar tissue can affect how our body functions, and how simple massage techniques by a Vancouver registered massage therapist can break up scar tissue and adhesion, lowering and ultimately eliminating the associated discomfort and pain.
