Vancouver Massage Therapy Article of the Month: Structure, Function, and Fascia
Many Vancouver Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) use a fascial approach, focusing on the tissue that envelopes every structure in your body, down to the cellular level. Fascia is pervasive – it connects all structures in the body, as echoed in the familiar saying “We are all connected”.
The concept of structure affecting function and vice versa is a key principle of this approach. If a structure is whole and as it is designed, it can then perform its function optimally. If a structure is “broken”, injured, or impeded somehow, it cannot perform its function optimally.
For example, let’s take a muscle in your upper arm and shoulder complex designed to contract to brush your hair. Maybe you injured it, or have a repetitive strain injury which has affected the myofascial packaging, causing it to be adhered and bound to surrounding structures. It is no longer three-dimensionally free. It goes to follow that it can no longer perform its function optimally.
Similarly, a large intestine with exterior fascial restriction might not perform its function optimally. What might this mean? And what might it lead to over time? We can be curious about ailments such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), constipation, diarrhea, colitis, and diverticulitis flares, among others.
Myofascial release, visceral fascial work, and fascial release are all terms for approaches used by some trained Vancouver Registered Massage Therapists. Some of them work at our clinic, Broadway Wellness. This approach can be directed toward the musculoskeletal system, or within the visceral (organ) system, to target and release or soften fascia that has become fibrous and less mobile, allowing less movement of affected structures.
