Massage Therapy for Tennis Elbow and Radial Tunnel Syndrome

In our busy, active lives, our arms and elbows get so much use that we hardly even think about it – until it starts to hurt. Whether it’s from walking the dog, going kayaking or simply typing on a keyboard all day, tendon overuse is an extremely common issue. Overuse can lead to inflammation and tearing of the tendon in the forearm and elbow. We often categorize this condition as “tennis elbow”, but there’s another different cause that could be causing you pain.
Radial Tunnel Syndrome (RTS) is a type of nerve compression that targets the radial nerve. Another name for it is “Resistant Tennis Elbow”, because it feels similar but is more difficult to treat. It can be aggravated by any activity that causes the forearm muscles to contract.
An effective treatment for both tennis elbow and RTS is massage therapy. One of the causes of pain is collagen degeneration in the tendon, and direct pressure and friction can help encourage collagen to rebuild. For RTS, some target areas include the neck, thoracic region, wrist and fingers to address other areas of nerve entrapment.
