Massage for Muscle Recovery

| Categorized: Vancouver Massage Therapy.

Therapeutic hands of a Registered Massage Therapist can be helpful in finding relief for sore muscles after arduous exercise. Some people like to have a treatment a couple of days following, or when they start to feel the aching symptoms.  How do you make sure you’re getting the most out of your treatment?

A new study in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, while still in the preliminary stages, suggests that massage therapy is best for muscle recovery when the treatment occurs immediately following strenuous output. The research was conducted with rabbits whereby after exercise, groups of rabbits were either massaged immediately, 48 hours post exercise, or not massaged at all. These groups showed 60%, 30% and 15% recovery, respectively. The group that received massage immediately also showed an 8% decrease in muscle weight. These findings show that massage therapy immediately following exercise can result in a faster recovery rate from soreness, fewer damaged muscle fibres, reduced inflammation and a fast dissipation of fluids. Vancouver RMTs often note that the longer the delay of treatment, the more the body establishes a pattern for tension in an effort to compensate for a damaged muscle.
