How Shoes Are Hurting Our Feet and Changing Our Gait

“It took 4 million years to develop our unique human foot and our consequent distinctive form of gait, a remarkable feat of bioengineering. Yet, in only a few thousand years, and with one carelessly designed instrument, our shoes, we have warped the pure anatomical form of human gait, obstructing its engineering efficiency, afflicting it with strains and stresses and denying it its natural grace of form and ease of movement head to foot.”
The human foot works pretty well on it’s own, and a lifetime of wearing shoes isn’t doing it any favours. The way we wear shoes most of the time now is being compared to the wearing of a perpetual cast. It’s true that in today’s world walking barefoot all the time just isn’t an option, but understanding how the feet work and how they impact our gait can shed light on the health of our feet and the rest of our body.
