Vancouver Naturopathy Article of the Week – Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance

It’s common to have a reaction to certain foods – many of us are careful to avoid eating things like shellfish, dairy, gluten, wheat, peanuts and so on.  The determining factor in diagnosing the reaction as a food allergy or food intolerance is whether the immune system is involved or not.

True food allergies involve IgE antibodies in the immune system and can cause severe and life threatening anaphylactic reactions.  Food intolerance, also known as non-allergic food hypersensitivity, is when we lack certain digestive enzymes resulting in some foods not breaking down properly.  Symptoms are often similar so people commonly confuse the two, although usually symptoms of intolerance generally take longer to emerge than that of an allergic reaction.
