Banana Peels .. Who Knew: Don’t Throw Away These Nutrient-packed Food Remnants!

| Categorized: Vancouver Naturopathic Medicine.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Well these few foods seem to be everyone’s trash but they are really your treasures! While a little unorthodox in our daily food routine, these foods are packed with amazing nutrients and health benefits. They may not be the tastiest part of the fruit/vegetable which may account for why we have never given them a second look, but we can incorporate them into the things we already love with hardly even knowing!

Next time you discard part of a fruit or vegetable think about what you might be missing! There was an article published by The Institute for Natural Healing highlights a few extra special “food waste” items that could really add to the value of a meal; everything from preventing heart disease and stroke, to decreasing cancer risk, and arthritis pain. And they are:

  1. Banana Peel
  2. Carrot Greens
  3. Orange Peel
  4. Beet Greens
  5. Watermelon Rind

As mentioned, right off the bat, these things don’t evoke culinary wonder and excessive salivary gland action but it’s all about how good it is for you, right? If you’re not quite there, click the link on the article above for more reasons why you should give them a try, and good ways to incorporate them into what you are already eating! Why give all the good stuff to the compost pile if you can use some of it too?
