Adrenal fatigue, also known as non-Addison’s hypoadrenia, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, neurasthenia, adrenal neurasthenia, and adrenal apathy, is a syndrome (a collection of signs and symptoms) that results when the functioning of the adrenal glands perform below the necessary level.  Adrenal fatigue is most commonly associated with stress, but can also emerge during or after chronic infections, particularly respiratory infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and the flu.

The symptom of fatigue experienced by the sufferer is unique in that is not relieved by sleep, and is difficult to identify.  He or she may appear and behave normal with no obvious signs of any illness, but lives day to day with a subtle yet disturbing sense of weariness, exhaustion, and depletion.  It’s common for people suffering from adrenal fatigue to self medicate with coffee and other stimulants to get any sort of energy to make it through the day.

Adrenal fatigue affects millions of people around the world, although conventional medicine is yet to regard it as a distinct syndrome.  If you or someone you know shows the signs of this most disruptive condition, consider making an appointment with a qualified Naturopathic Doctor who can address and recommend suitable treatment options.
